Seven figures decide whether a device fits.
Anyone requesting handling equipment is asked for capacity, reach and lifting height. Anyone assessing it, for cycle time and payback. This page explains each figure and how they relate.

Lifting capacity is not the weight of the workpiece but workpiece plus lifting attachment. Reach turns it into a moment that jib, column and foundation must carry; an off-centre centre of gravity creates a second moment at the gripper. Lifting height and headroom decide whether the device fits under the ceiling and still clears the obstacle.
On the economic side are cycle time and changeover time – a device that breaks the cycle is not used – and payback, which includes avoided sick days as well as time saved.

Lifting capacity and load moment calculator
Two figures stand at the start of every sizing: how much must the device carry, and which moment does that create at column and gripper? Both follow f...

A series-built hoist is designed for a defined service life. How much of it has been used can be estimated from mechanism group, load spectrum and run...

Calculating payload
It is not the load that tips the unit. The lever does.

11 Terms- Centre of gravity
- The point at which the whole mass of a part can be thought of as concentrated. With the suspension point above it, the part hangs...
- Changeover time
- The time between the last good part of one series and the first good part of the next. It is pure downtime and therefore the start...
- Cycle time
- The time available to a work step in a cycled production. It is the sharpest selection criterion for a lifting aid: a device that...
- Dead weight
- The weight of gripper, beam and adapters added to the payload. It is regularly underestimated: a vacuum beam with six cups soon we...
- Headroom
- The space a hoist occupies above the load and which is therefore lost to the stroke. In existing halls headroom is often the real...
- Outreach
- The horizontal distance between pivot and load attachment. Outreach enters the tipping moment linearly and is thus the second half...
- Payback
- The period after which an investment has paid for itself from the costs saved. In handling technology it comes from three sources:...
- Payload
- The mass a unit may guide at the tool interface – including gripper, adapter and attachments. Figures quoted without the tool are...
- Safety factor
- The ratio between the calculated bearable and the actually occurring load. It covers what the calculation does not know: material...
- Stroke
- The distance between the lowest and highest position of the load attachment. It is rarely needed in full, but the two ends decide:...
- Tilting moment
- The product of load and reach, transferred into the floor at the base of a pillar-mounted unit. It determines design, pillar secti...
