Lifting a 400-kilogram cable drum onto the pay-off stand

In cable assembly the drum is changed several times a day. The usual route – tip, roll, lever it onto the stand with a crowbar – is quickly learned and the reason for most foot injuries in this area.

01 — The task

Nobody stops a rolling drum by hand.

Fetch the drum from storage, bring it to the pay-off stand, lift it to shaft height and meet the mount. The drum is round, heavy and has its centre of gravity in the middle – it wants to roll the moment it stands. On the stand the bore has to meet the shaft, usually at 60 to 80 centimetres. By hand that means two people lifting while one guides the shaft.

How we solve it

Through the bore, not around the flanges

The drum has a shaft bore – that is where it is meant to carry and where it later sits on the stand. A pick-up mandrel that reaches through the bore and expands holds the drum in exactly the position it belongs in on the shaft. Clamps on the flanges are second best: wooden flanges give under clamping force and the drum arrives at an angle.

Suspend it so it can turn – it will anyway

A drum on a mandrel turns freely as soon as its centre of gravity is not exactly on the axis – and it never is, because the cable is unevenly wound. We therefore design the mount with a braked rotator: the operator turns the drum deliberately so the cable start is on top, and there it stays. Without that brake it turns away as it is set down and the cable start ends up underneath.

The last movement is horizontal

The drum does not come onto the stand from above but from the side: first lift to shaft height, then travel horizontally until the shaft passes through the bore. An articulated arm with a guided lifting axis does exactly that – lifting and pushing are separate movements, and the last one runs on a straight line. On a rope both are coupled, which is why a second person is needed there.

  • The drum never rolls freely – the commonest accident cause disappears.
  • The change succeeds alone instead of in pairs.
  • The shaft is met on the first attempt.
  • Wooden flanges stay undamaged because the load goes through the bore.
  • After setting down, the cable start is where it is needed.

Does one mount fit all drum sizes?

For the usual bore diameters yes – one expanding mandrel covers a range. With widely differing widths an adjustable support is advisable so the drum hangs centred. That is a setting, not a conversion.

What about drums without a through bore?

Then only a flange pick-up remains. For wooden drums we use wide, padded jaws that spread the force across the surface. Where a bore exists, it is still the better route.

How high does the unit have to lift?

To the shaft height of the stand plus about ten centimetres of reserve – usually 90 to 100 centimetres. What matters is not maximum lift but that the drum stands steady at that height and can be moved in horizontally.
