Moving a sheet stack without the top layers shifting

Paper is smooth, and a stack holds together only by its own weight. Grip it at the sides and accelerate, and the top layers shift – and a shifted stack does not run in the feeder.

01 — The task

A shifted stack cannot be saved at the feeder.

Take the stack off the pallet, bring it to the feeder and load it; at the delivery take the finished stack and set it on the despatch pallet. Weights run from fifty to four hundred kilograms depending on format and grammage. By hand the work happens in part stacks – thirty kilograms a grip, a hundred times a shift, with deep trunk flexion at the bottom of the pallet.

02 — The solution

How we solve it

Clamp with a counter-hold, not only sideways

A stack clamped only at the sides loses its top layers as soon as it accelerates. So the mount gets a counter-hold resting lightly from above, holding the layers together while the side jaws carry. Clamping force follows the friction coefficient of paper on paper – lower than any expectation and varying with the coating.

Slow is fast here

Acceleration is the critical quantity, not speed. A device with damped starting and braking moves the stack evenly instead of jerking it. In practice that is faster than manual work because no edge alignment is needed – the twenty seconds lost at the feeder with every shifted stack disappear.

The bottom layer is the most expensive

The top stack lies comfortably, the bottom one in deep trunk flexion at twenty centimetres. In the key indicator method that posture is exactly where an assessment tips into the red band. A device with sufficient stroke takes both ends – which is why we ask for the lowest pick point when sizing, not the average one.

03 — What changes

  • The stack edge stays flush – feeder stoppages fall.
  • Whole stacks instead of part stacks: fewer grips per order.
  • The deep trunk flexion at the bottom layer disappears.
  • The sequence stays even instead of slowing at the end of a shift.
  • Changing formats run on an adjustable clamping width.

Clamp or pick up from below?

Both are usual. Picking up from below is gentler and needs a pallet or an intermediate sheet; clamping is faster and works without a base but requires the counter-hold. Which suits is decided by the supply arrangement – we look at that at the station.

How tall may a stack be?

The critical thing is the ratio of height to base area. Up to about a metre at usual formats this is uncritical; above that the stack becomes tip-sensitive, and we work with taller jaws and lower acceleration.

What about coated paper?

Coated papers are smoother and the friction coefficient falls further. There we size the clamping force higher and always use the counter-hold. With very smooth grades we test on a sample from current production.
