Taking the top container from two metres – and the bottom one from thirty centimetres

A full small load carrier weighs 15 to 45 kilograms. It is taken off the stack twice under bad conditions: at the top above shoulder height, at the bottom from deep trunk flexion. Three comfortable layers lie between – and they count for nothing in any assessment.

01 — The task

The stack is too high at the start and too low at the end.

Take the container off the stack, guide it to the line or workstation, set it down. The stack stands on a pallet and is 1.80 to 2.10 metres high on delivery. The top layer is gripped above shoulder height with the load in front of the body; the bottom one from thirty centimetres. Both movements are individually critical under the key indicator method – together with two hundred repetitions a shift they produce the red band.

02 — The solution

How we solve it

A balancer is enough – and faster here

Containers are lifted, guided and set down; nothing is joined against a stop. That makes the rope balancer the right and the fastest design: low headroom, long lift, quick pick-up. On a rail system it reaches both stack and line. An articulated arm would be oversized here and slower to apply – and speed is the decisive quantity at two hundred repetitions.

The gripper takes the rim

Load carriers have a surrounding rim or grip ledges – that is where the mount acts. Two jaws closing from outside against the rim hold securely, need no alignment and leave the contents untouched. For different sizes an adjustable jaw spacing with detents suffices; a change gripper is rarely needed with containers.

What the lift table does not solve

A scissor lift table brings the stack to a constant height and is the simpler answer where it fits. It fails on two counts: it lifts the pallet, not the individual container – which still has to be pulled off the stack by hand – and it needs floor space that a cycled line rarely has spare. Where both fit it is cheaper; where they do not, there is no way around the lifting aid. We settle that at the workstation, not in the quotation.

03 — What changes

  • Reaching above shoulder height and out of deep trunk flexion disappears.
  • The load sits on the unit; the operator guides and places.
  • The assessment improves in force, posture and execution conditions.
  • The cycle becomes more even because the last layer is no longer the slowest.
  • Different container sizes run across the same station without conversion.

Would a lift table not do?

Sometimes yes. The lift table keeps stack height constant, but the individual container still has to be pulled off by hand – at 45 kilograms that remains the critical movement. And it needs floor space. We look at the station and say honestly which of the two fits.

Balancer or manipulator?

Balancer. Things are lifted and set down, not joined – and at two hundred repetitions a shift every second in the pick-up counts. The rigid arm would be slower here without offering an advantage.

How fast is this in cycle?

A practised sequence takes six to eight seconds per container including pick-up and placing. That is usually faster than by hand once the load exceeds 20 kilograms – and it stays equally fast across the shift, which by hand it does not.
