Pulling a roll out of the frame without jamming the journal

A roll is a simple body: round, heavy, with two bearing journals. That is exactly the problem. It has to stay level, or the journal jams in its seat – and a jammed journal costs more than the whole change.

01 — The task

The change takes twenty minutes. Nineteen of them are alignment.

Pull the old roll out of the frame, set it down, pick up the new one and enter it into the bearing seats. The overhead crane can take the weight, but it hangs on two ropes and swings; aligning to the bearing seats becomes a test of patience with two people on the rope. And for that time the crane is missing from the rest of the hall. The change itself is rarely the problem – alignment time is.

How we solve it

Prism cradles instead of a rope sling

A roll belongs in two prism cradles, not in a sling. The cradles sit symmetrically about the centre of gravity, hold the roll level and leave the barrel undamaged – with a polyurethane insert for coated rolls. Because the mount locates positively it cannot slip if the roll catches on resistance while entering.

The rigid arm holds the angle

Entering axially depends on exactly one quantity: that the angle does not change. An articulated arm manipulator holds the roll in the set position while the operator pushes it into the seat with light pressure. For long rolls a fine adjustment for tilt and lateral position is added, correcting the last millimetres via a handwheel or a damped axis.

At the machine instead of on the crane

A rail system above the machine makes the change independent of the crane: it is always ready, reaches machine and roll store, and the rest of the hall keeps its crane. In confined plants we use a low-headroom lift axis – it needs less space above the roll than any chain hoist and so fits under low ceilings too.

  • The roll stays level throughout the movement.
  • Journal and seat are not jammed – consequential damage disappears.
  • Alignment time drops markedly; downtime gets shorter and plannable.
  • The overhead crane stays available for the rest of the hall.
  • Coated barrel surfaces stay free of pressure marks.

We have an overhead crane – is that not enough?

For the weight yes, for the accuracy rarely. On a rope the roll swings, and entering the bearing seats becomes a two-person job. The real gain lies in alignment time and in keeping the crane free.

How much space does this need above the machine?

With a lift axis about 300 to 400 millimetres above the highest roll position suffices. That is far less than a chain hoist with a hook and makes the solution possible under low ceilings.

Are varying roll diameters a problem?

No. Prism cradles cover a diameter range of about 1 to 3 without conversion. Beyond that we use latched inserts that can be swapped in seconds.
