When insulating glass is assembled, a few seconds decide whether a unit will seal. The panes have to meet plane-parallel, and no mount may touch the edge seal in the process.

01 — The task

Two millimetres of offset is not a tolerance, it is scrap.

Take panes from the rack, inspect them, guide them to the assembly point and bring them together with the second pane. Formats run from one to three metres, weight from thirty to two hundred kilograms. By hand it takes two people with cups in their hands, and accuracy depends on both lowering at the same speed. An offset costs the unit, a knock costs the edge.

How we solve it

Two vacuum circuits as basic equipment

With vertically held glass, two separate vacuum circuits with their own cups and reservoirs are the usual state of the art. If one circuit fails, the other holds the pane, and the warning device reports the failure immediately. Check valves prevent venting. This design is not a precaution for especially careful plants but the precondition for vertical glass handling being permissible.

Cups sit in the field, not at the edge

Cup positions are calculated from format and weight and deliberately lie in the surface – far enough from the edge to leave the edge seal free, and distributed so the pane does not sag between them. With coated glass, larger cups with soft lips and lower vacuum are used so no marks appear.

Plane-parallel means guided, not held

Bringing two panes together plane-parallel by hand requires two people working at the same speed. A device with a guided lift axis makes it a one-person job: the pane is fixed in the horizontal and lowered vertically without the angle changing. Fine adjustment handles the last millimetres, and the operator has both hands free to check the position.

How large may the pane be?

The limit is deflection, not weight. From about three metres edge length a beam is needed to spread the cups over several points – otherwise stresses arise between the cups at which glass breaks. Up to six metres that is well manageable.

What happens on power failure?

Nothing, if properly sized: reservoirs and check valves hold the vacuum for several minutes, and the warning reports the failure. That time is enough to set the pane down under control. Without a reservoir the installation would not be permissible.

Does it work with coated glass?

Yes, with the right sealing lip. Critical are soft coatings that take marks; there we use larger cups with lower vacuum. We always test on a sample, because coatings differ markedly.
