Taking a warm die out of the machine without jamming the guide pillars

A die change ties up two people and the overhead crane for half an hour in many foundries. The lift itself takes seconds – the rest is aligning to guide pillars with a millimetre of clearance at three hundred degrees.

01 — The task

Warm, heavy and with guide pillars that forgive nothing.

Pull the old die out of the machine, set it down, pick up the new one and enter it into the clamping. The tool is heavy, warm and has to stay level throughout: guide pillars and fits tolerate no jamming. On the crane it hangs on two chains and swings, and entering becomes a test of patience with two people at the tool – in an environment where nobody wants to stand longer than necessary.

02 — The solution

How we solve it

The rigid arm holds the angle

Entering axially depends on one quantity: that the angle does not change. An articulated arm manipulator holds the tool in the set position while it is pushed into the clamping with light pressure. On the crane the same load hangs on two chains and swings at the moment accuracy is needed. A fine adjustment for tilt and lateral position handles the last millimetres.

A mount that keeps distance from the heat

Gripping is at pick-up holes or clamping ledges on the tool – positively, because a warm, scaled surface allows no safe friction grip. A heat shield sits between load and device, all contacting parts are temperature-resistant, and the operator stands outside the radiant heat throughout. That is not comfort but the precondition for clean work.

The calculation is in downtime minutes

A casting machine stands during the change. If the operation drops from thirty to twelve minutes and four changes happen per shift, that is over an hour of additional running time a day. As a rule that calculation carries the project alone – the relief for the operators and the freed crane come as side effects.

Up to what tool temperature does this work?

With a heat shield and temperature-resistant mount, up to about 300 °C at the surface. Above that it becomes a special design in which the life of seals and lubricants is calculated too. The question is usually not whether it works but how long the wear parts last.

We have an overhead crane – is that not enough?

For the weight yes, for entering rarely. On two chains the tool swings, and aligning to the guide pillars becomes a two-person job. The gain lies in change time and in keeping the crane free.

Does one device suit several tool sizes?

Yes, via a mount with adjustable spacing and detents. For each tool family the setting is determined once and labelled – changing over then takes under a minute and no tools.
