Inspected means documented.
Lifting equipment must be inspected at recurring intervals by a competent person. How often is decided not by a calendar but by your risk assessment – a point that is regularly overlooked. We inspect equipment of any make, set the intervals with you, and leave behind a record that stands up to a question.
The answer “once a year” is common and often right – but it is not the law. Section 3 of the German Industrial Safety Regulation obliges the operator to set the type, scope and intervals of inspections themselves, in the risk assessment. The accident insurers’ rules then name a minimum interval of one year. With heavy duty, an aggressive environment or a safety-critical task the correct interval can be shorter – and then the annual date is simply not enough.
Not every technician is a competent person. TRBS 1203 requires suitable vocational training, practical experience with that class of equipment, recent activity in the field – and freedom from instruction in making the assessment. We provide the person who meets those requirements for lifting equipment, and state what the qualification rests on.
Chain hoists, rope hoists, balancers, lifting axes and manipulators fall under DGUV rule 54 – winches, hoisting and traction equipment. Jib cranes and runways fall under DGUV rule 52 – cranes, with a different scope and a crane logbook that travels with the installation. Where a manipulator hangs from a runway, both apply to one installation. This distinction is the most common reason an inspection stays formally incomplete.
An inspection report per unit with unambiguous identification, findings, assessment and – where needed – a deadline for remedy, plus the next due date. For cranes, the entry in the crane logbook as well. We also write down what was in order: a report listing only defects does not, in case of doubt, prove that the rest was looked at.
