Standing a cabinet side up without dragging it on the floor

A coated side panel is two metres tall, eighteen millimetres thick and weighs twenty-five kilograms. None of that is heavy. What is hard is that every contact with floor, bench or neighbouring part stays visible.

01 — The task

The scratch does not happen while carrying. It happens on setting down.

Take the side panel off the stack, upright it, guide it to the assembly jig and join it with base and back. By hand that takes two people or leaning – and leaning means edge on floor. With melamine-faced and lacquered surfaces, handling scrap is in many plants a bigger item than material waste.

How we solve it

Vacuum is the only right answer here

Coated panels must not be clamped – every jaw leaves a mark. Suction cups take the surface, spread the load and leave no trace. For furniture panels four to six cups with a soft sealing lip suffice; what matters is that they act on the back face and that the vacuum circuit has a reservoir and a warning device.

The swing out of horizontal

The panel comes off the stack lying down and goes into the jig standing up. A damped swing axis in the beam turns that rotation into a finger movement: the operator guides, the axis brakes, the part does not tip through. Without that axis every uprighting becomes a two-person job – or the part is rested on the floor, and that is exactly where the scratch comes from.

The balancer is fast enough – and that counts

Furniture production runs to a cycle. A rope balancer on a rail is the lightest and fastest design, with the longest lift and lowest headroom. Because joining carcass parts involves no appreciable joining forces, the rigid arm is not needed here – it would only be slower. Selection follows the task, not the brochure.

Do suction cups hold on textured surfaces?

On usual melamine and foil surfaces yes. With deeply textured decors or open-pored wood the holding force drops; there we use larger cups with a softer lip and increase the sizing accordingly. We test that on a sample, not from a table.

What happens if the air supply fails?

The vacuum circuit gets a reservoir and a check valve plus an audible warning when pressure falls below the set point. The part is held long enough to set it down safely. On vacuum lifters that is not an extra but a precondition.

Balancer or articulated arm?

Balancer. Things are lifted, swung and set down but not joined against resistance. The rigid arm would bring no advantage here and would be slower to apply – at two hundred parts a shift that is the decisive point.
