Turning a concrete part whose edges keep every knock

Concrete parts are heavy, unwieldy and still delicate: compressive strength is high, edge strength low. Whatever knocks while being turned chips off – and with facing concrete the part is then second grade.

01 — The task

Concrete forgives nothing. A chipped edge stays visible.

Lift the part out of the mould, turn it 180 degrees, inspect it and place it on the stack. While turning, the centre of gravity shifts throughout the movement, and that is where doing it by hand gets dangerous: two people hold a part that suddenly pulls at the tipping point. The alternative – rolling it over on the floor – costs edges. Neither is a lasting solution in a cycled plant.

How we solve it

The pivot belongs in the centre of gravity

A turner is only as good as the position of its axis. With the axis in the part centre of gravity, a hand force of a few newtons turns the whole way and the part stays put in any intermediate position. Off centre, the part pulls and has to be held. So we calculate the axis position for each part family and make it adjustable via a latched slide.

Clamping with a soft jaw

Holding is by clamping on two opposing faces, not on edges. The jaws get a polyurethane pad that spreads pressure and protects the surface. Clamping force is sized against friction coefficient and the tipping moments across the whole turn – not against weight alone. A check valve keeps the clamp closed even if pressure drops.

Built for dust and damp

A precast plant is not an assembly hall. Drives, bearings and guides get a higher protection rating, open racks are avoided, and where possible we work pneumatically – compressed air is there anyway and tolerates dust better than any electronics. Service points sit within reach, not where a platform is needed.

How does this work with changing part sizes?

Via an adjustable clamping width and a latched pivot axis. For each part family the axis position is determined once and labelled – changing over then takes under a minute without tools.

Does the part hold if the air supply fails?

Yes. The clamp gets a check valve and an air reservoir; on pressure loss it stays closed. That is not an option but part of every friction-based design.

What about fresh, not yet cured concrete?

Then the permissible surface pressure drops and the jaws are made larger. For very early demoulding we use vacuum or a positively locating support instead – strength at demoulding decides.
