Placing a six-metre panel into the fixture without twisting it

A composite structural panel weighs little and is still barely handleable. It is floppy over its whole length, delicate at every edge – and damage shows not on impact but only in ultrasound.

01 — The task

Sixty kilograms over six metres is heavier than two hundred over one.

Take the panel or shell from the storage rack, guide it to the drilling or assembly fixture and place it accurately. The weight is forty to a hundred kilograms, the length up to six metres. By hand it takes three or four people lifting and lowering simultaneously – and the risk lies exactly in that coordination: whoever lets go too early creates a point load you cannot see on the part.

How we solve it

The beam follows the stiffness

Eight to twelve pick-up points on a frame beam spread the load so no impermissible deflection arises between them. Their position comes from the calculation, not from experience: closer at the frames, wider in the fields. Because the beam maps the part contour, the panel stays in shape over its whole length – even when guided to the fixture at an angle.

Soft, large-area, with defined pressure

Composites forgive no point load. The pads are therefore made large-area and soft, with a pressure that is calculated rather than estimated. Designed stops on the beam prevent the edge striking anywhere – not as a warning in the instructions but as a component standing in the way before damage occurs.

Accuracy instead of force

At the fixture, tenths of a millimetre count. So the device gets a fine adjustment in three directions correcting the last millimetres without effort. The operator aligns, the device holds the position – a task for four people becomes one for a single person who works more accurately than any group that has to coordinate.

How many pick-up points does a panel need?

The deflection calculation answers that, not experience. At six metres length and thin-walled structure, eight to twelve are usual. What matters is that the points follow the stiffness: more at the frames, fewer in the fields.

Do suction cups hold on composites?

On painted and smooth surfaces yes. On untreated or textured surfaces the holding force drops; there we use larger cups with softer lips and increase the reserve. We always test on the actual part.

Can one beam take several part variants?

Yes, via sliding pick-up arms with labelled detents. With strongly differing contours a change frame with a quick coupling is the better answer – changeover in minutes instead of rebuilding for hours.
