Setting a sand core into the mould that can break as it is offered up

A sand core is heavy enough to strain the back and at the same time so brittle that too firm a grip breaks it. That combination makes setting cores a task where force is exactly the wrong means.

01 — The task

Gripping too hard is as wrong as dropping it.

Take the core or core package from the supply position, guide it to the mould and set it accurately into the core prints. By hand the core is gripped, lifted, raised over the moulding box and lowered – usually in a bent posture over the box wall. The risk is twofold: the core can break, and it can sit off position. Both show only on the casting, when the wall thickness is wrong.

How we solve it

Carry rather than clamp

A sand core does not belong in tongs. It is carried from below or at the core prints, with a positive mount that follows the contour and spreads the load widely. Where clamping is necessary it happens with soft, large-area jaws and a limited, adjustable force. Sizing follows the permissible surface pressure of the core material, not the weight.

Lower vertically, do not swing

The core has to stand above the prints and then be lowered vertically. A rope device with guided lift allows exactly that: the operator aligns in the horizontal and then lowers without a swing changing the position. Because the device holds the load, both hands stay free to guide the core into the prints – the decisive difference from manual work.

Built for moulding sand

Sand is abrasive and finds every open guide. So the guides are enclosed, the drives pneumatic and the service points reachable from below. The mount is shaped so sand cannot collect but falls off – a form specified from the start, not replaced later by more frequent cleaning.

  • The core is carried instead of clamped – breakage while setting largely disappears.
  • Lowering happens vertically and accurately into the prints.
  • Both hands stay free for guiding.
  • The bent posture over the box wall disappears.
  • Scrap from cores set off position falls markedly.

The core weighs only twelve kilograms – is it worth it?

At two hundred cores a shift yes, but not because of the load. It is about the bent posture over the box wall and about a guided core breaking less often and sitting more accurately. The calculation usually works out through scrap, not ergonomics.

How do you grip a core without core prints?

From below, with a cradle following the contour. For recurring cores we make the mount to the core contour; for changing cores we work with adjustable supports. Vacuum is usually ruled out because the surface is too porous.

Does the equipment withstand moulding sand?

In the right design yes: enclosed guides, pneumatic drives without electronics at the load and a form that sheds sand rather than collecting it. We plan a shortened maintenance schedule for this environment.
