What handling equipment must fulfil – and what the operator must.
Two sets of duties meet at every device: the manufacturer places a safe machine on the market, the operator provides a safe workplace. This page explains the terms on both sides.

On the manufacturer’s side are the risk assessment, CE marking and the standards that specify them – for manually guided manipulators, EN 14238. Added to these are requirements from the environment: explosion protection in ATEX zones, ingress protection against dust and water, hygienic design in food and pharmaceutical production, cleanroom suitability.
On the operator’s side is the workplace risk assessment. For manual lifting and carrying, German law requires it explicitly through the Lastenhandhabungsverordnung; the key indicator methods are the tool for it. There is no fixed kilogram limit – the assessment decides.
