Glossary

Material handling

The movement, storage, protection and control of material within a plant. The term is broader than handling technology and includes storage, conveying and transport operations. In international tenders “material handling” is the usual collective term.

One term, two meanings

In English, material handling – materials handling in British usage – refers to the movement, protection, storage and control of material along its whole route through production, warehousing and distribution. Forklift trucks, racking, conveyors and cranes belong to it just as the lifting aid at the workstation does.

In German industry the borrowed word “Materialhandling” is often used more narrowly: for handling material at the workstation, that is picking up, transferring and setting down. Anyone reading the term in an enquiry from a German-speaking company should clarify which meaning is intended.

02

How it differs from neighbouring terms

Compared with workpiece handling, material handling is coarser: it concerns raw material, semi-finished products, packs and unit loads that have to get from A to B – not the precise insertion of a component into a fixture.

Compared with conveyor technology it is broader because it includes storage and protection. And compared with intralogistics, the narrower sense lacks the control and information level. In its wide English sense, however, it largely coincides with what German-speaking industry calls intralogistics.

03

What decides at the workstation

For material handling at an individual station, four details count: the weight of the heaviest unit, its dimensions and how it can be gripped, the frequency, and the heights of pick-up and set-down.

Raw material is often more awkward than the finished part. Sacks yield, bars are long, panels are large, drums are round. The gripper therefore decides whether a device gets used: a device that carries the weight but needs two more hand movements to attach than carrying by hand does will be left standing in the corner.

04

Typical mistakes in international projects

Misunderstandings arise mainly from the words.

  • “Material handling equipment” in a tender may mean the entire storage and conveying system – not just lifting aids.
  • In robotics, “manipulator” means the robot arm itself; in German handling technology “Manipulator” means a hand-guided load handling device.
  • “Capacity” without qualification leaves open whether the weight of the gripper is included.
  • Weights in pounds and dimensions in inches are overlooked and planning continues in kilograms and millimetres.

German English Note
Hebehilfe lifting aid, lift assist “lift assist” mainly in North America
Handgeführter Manipulator manual manipulator, manually controlled load manipulating device the second expression comes from EN 14238
Lastaufnahmemittel load lifting attachment, below-the-hook device the second expression is North American
Greifer gripper, end effector “end effector” in robotics
Traglast capacity, rated load, working load limit always clarify whether the gripper is included
Ausladung reach, outreach measured from the axis of rotation
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Material handling

Is material handling the same as handling technology?

No. Handling technology (German: Handhabungstechnik) means the deliberate moving and positioning of parts and is the narrower term. Material handling in the English sense includes storage, conveying and transport.

What do German suppliers mean by “Hebehilfe”?

A lifting aid: equipment that takes the weight of the load while the operator guides it. In North America the same thing is usually called a lift assist. A device with a rigid arm is called a manipulator, with “manual” or “hand-guided” added to distinguish it from a robot.

What information does a supplier need for a material handling task?

Weight and dimensions of the load, type of surface or packaging, frequency, pick-up and set-down positions with heights, and the conditions in the building. Photographs of the workstation save most of the follow-up questions.
