Glossary

Handling technology

Umbrella term for all technical means by which loads are picked up, moved, positioned and set down within a workstation or plant. It covers hand-guided equipment such as manipulators and balancers as well as semi- and fully automated systems. It is distinguished from conveying technology, which handles continuous transport, and from robotics, which replaces the operator rather than supporting them.

01

What handling means

Handling means bringing an object into a particular spatial arrangement, changing that arrangement or maintaining it for a time. This is how the German guideline VDI 2860, widely used in the technical literature, puts it. The decisive point is the arrangement: what matters is not only where a part is but also how it lies – position and orientation.

Handling technology is the engineering that achieves this. It begins with gripping a component and ends when it sits correctly oriented in the fixture, in the machine or on the pallet.

02

The five sub-functions

VDI 2860 divides handling into five sub-functions. Every handling task can be composed from them.

  • Storing: keeping parts in stock, ordered in a magazine or unordered in a hopper.
  • Changing quantities: dividing, merging, allocating, separating.
  • Moving: rotating, shifting, swivelling, orienting, positioning.
  • Securing: holding, clamping, gripping and releasing again.
  • Checking: verifying that a part is present, lies correctly and is the right one.
03

Where it sits in material flow

In a plant’s material flow, handling stands beside conveying and storage. Conveying overcomes distance, storage bridges time, handling establishes the orientation in which the part is needed. A conveyor brings the crate to the workstation; handling technology begins where the part is taken from the crate and installed.

What separates it from lifting technology is the aim: there the weight is the task, here the position.

04

Manual, hand-guided, automatic

Handling takes place on three levels. On the first the person carries and guides the part. On the second a device carries the weight and the person guides – the field of balancers, manipulators and lifting axes. On the third a machine does both: feeding equipment, pick-and-place units and industrial robots.

Which level fits is decided by volume and variety. The more uniform the task and the higher the volume, the sooner automation pays. The more variants, the smaller the batches and the more judgement joining requires, the better the hand-guided device: it takes the weight and leaves the decision with the person.

Automatic The machine carries and guides Feeding equipment, pick-and-place unit, robot Uniform sequences, high volume
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Handling technology

What is the difference between handling and conveying technology?

Conveying technology moves goods from one place to another. Handling technology brings an individual part into a particular orientation – rotated, aligned, installed. The two interlock but solve different tasks.

Is robotics part of handling technology?

Industrial robots are handling equipment and technically belong to the field. In everyday plant usage, however, “handling technology” often means the hand-guided equipment that supports the person rather than replacing them.

Is “material handling” the same thing?

Not quite. In English, “material handling” usually covers the whole movement, storage and control of goods in a plant, including conveyors and forklifts. Handling technology in the sense used here is narrower: positioning and orienting individual parts at the workstation.
