Load chain
The round steel chain a chain hoist lifts with. It wears in two places at once: the nominal diameter reduces at the contact point between links, and the pitch elongates. Both values are measured, not estimated – a chain still looks fine when it is ready for discard. As a guide, around ten per cent loss of nominal diameter or about five per cent elongation; the manufacturer’s figure prevails. If the chain jumps over the sprocket, as a rule both parts have to be replaced.
