Discard criteria
The condition in which a load-bearing medium has to be replaced – regardless of whether it still carries. On round steel chains this is essentially the loss of nominal diameter and elongation of the pitch; on wire ropes the number of broken wires per reference length to ISO 4309, plus strand failure, birdcaging, kinks and corrosion; on load hooks a ten per cent opening of the throat against the new dimension. A broken strand or birdcaging means immediate discard, whatever any count says.
