Torque reaction arm: maintenance and inspection

A torque reaction arm protects wrists – and for exactly that reason is rarely seen as lifting equipment. Yet it holds a tool suspended and carries away torques into four figures. If the spring balancer fails, the tool falls. That makes it an object of inspection like any other unit.

The inspection

Which rule applies – and at what interval

Spring balancer and reaction mount hold a load suspended and therefore fall under DGUV rule 54: inspection by a competent person at least once a year. In practice the torque reaction arm is the most frequently overlooked, because it looks like tool accessory rather than lifting equipment. A broken spring balancer, however, drops the tool just as a parted rope drops a load.

The maintenance

What actually gets done

Spring balancer under tool load

Testing is done with the tool actually hanging on it, not empty. A balancer that holds a lighter tool need not hold the heavier one. We check the float position, the return force and whether the tool stays put at any height.

The balancer’s load-bearing medium

Rope or strap inside the balancer is what the tool actually hangs from, and is the most commonly overlooked part. We pull it out over its full length and look at it – broken wires and fraying are almost always in the wound-up section.

Reaction mount under load

The support is loaded with the torque actually run at the workstation. Play in the support transfers straight into the operator’s wrist – precisely what the unit is there to prevent.

Retention against dropping

Tool mount and suspension need a secondary retention. A missing or loose safety rope is a common finding and fixed in minutes.

When the task has changed

A different tool

A heavier tool needs a stronger balancer. Considering both together is the point where practice comes apart – a new nutrunner is procured, the balancer stays the old one.

Higher torque

If the tightening torque increases, the support has to grow with it. It is calculated for a torque, not for a feeling – we recalculate the new condition.

Extend the working area

An additional rail bay brings the tool to further fastening points without the operator having to carry it.

Questions on maintenance and inspection

Does a torque reaction arm need inspecting at all?

Yes. It holds a tool suspended and is therefore hoisting and traction equipment under DGUV rule 54. That it looks like an accessory changes nothing – and a broken spring balancer drops the tool onto the workstation.

We have a new, heavier nutrunner. Does anything have to change?

Probably yes. The balancer is set to a weight, the support calculated for a torque. Both need reviewing when the tool changes – it is the most common reason a working installation suddenly becomes unpleasant to use.

Do you service spring balancers from other manufacturers?

Yes. The points inspected – load-bearing medium, pull force, retention, support – are the same on every make.
