Pneumatic lifting axis: maintenance and inspection

The lifting axis has neither chain nor rope and therefore no discard criteria in the classical sense. That does not make its inspection easier, it shifts it: what matters are seals, guides and whether the load stays put when the compressed air disappears.

The inspection

Which rule applies – and at what interval

The lifting axis is hoisting and traction equipment under DGUV rule 54: inspection by a competent person at least once a year, the interval taken from your risk assessment under section 3 of the German Industrial Safety Regulation. The focus differs from chain and rope units: instead of discard criteria on a load-bearing medium it is the safety of the pneumatic circuit that counts. Load holding on pressure loss is not a comfort question here but the safety function of the unit.

The maintenance

What actually gets done

Measure the creep

The axis is stopped with rated load at mid-stroke and observed over a defined period. If it creeps, the internal seal is tired – long before anything shows from outside. The measured distance goes into the report so the next visit sees a trend.

Behaviour on pressure loss

We isolate the circuit with a load attached and check that the axis holds. That is the safety function the check valve exists for – and the point a visual inspection fundamentally cannot cover.

Guide and tilting play

On a linear axis every off-centre load acts as a tilting moment on the guide. We measure the play at the load attachment, because that is where the lever acts, and check the guide for abrasion and contamination – swarf and dust are the most common cause of uneven travel here.

Treat the air

Most pneumatic damage arises not in the unit but in the supply: condensate, saturated filters, fluctuating pressure. We check the service unit and say so when the network rather than the unit is the cause.

When the task has changed

Change the stroke

A different stroke length is needed more often than a different capacity – for instance when a pallet is stacked higher. The work stays confined to the axis as long as the mount carries it.

From mobile to rail

A mobile lifting axis can be hung from a rail system once the workstation has become permanent. That opens up the area and takes stability out of daily operation.

Change the load attachment

Vacuum pad, tongs, mandrel: the workpiece changes more often than the unit. A quick-change system is usually cheaper than a second axis.

Frequently asked questions

Questions on maintenance and inspection

The axis creeps down slowly. Is that normal?

No. Creep under a standing load is always a finding – usually a tired seal or a leaking valve. Nor is it merely a comfort issue: load holding is a safety function and part of the recurring inspection.

What happens on pressure loss?

In a properly built circuit a check valve holds the load until it can be set down. But that has to be explicitly present and tested – it must not be assumed. We test it with a load attached, not on paper.

Do you service lifting axes from other manufacturers?

Yes. Pneumatics follows the same rules everywhere, and the safety-relevant points are the same on every make. Where manufacturer data exists we work to it.
