Articulated arm rope unit: maintenance and inspection

An articulated arm rope unit has two wear chains with nothing to do with each other: the wire rope and balancer, ageing by load cycles and deflections, and the arm structure, ageing by moment. Both belong in the same service – and are regularly treated separately or half forgotten.

The inspection

Which rule applies – and at what interval

The rope unit is hoisting and traction equipment under DGUV rule 54: inspection by a competent person at least once a year. The binding interval is set by you in the risk assessment under section 3 of the German Industrial Safety Regulation. For a rope drive the assessment of the wire rope to ISO 4309 is the core of the inspection and requires a visual check over the full running length, not only the part that happens to be visible. Where the unit hangs from a runway, DGUV rule 52 applies to that runway.

The limits come from the applicable rules. Where manufacturer data exists for the specific unit, it prevails.

The maintenance

What actually gets done

The rope over its full length

Broken wires occur where the rope is deflected – not where it is convenient to look. We run the unit over the whole stroke and assess the running length section by section. A rope with a broken strand or birdcaging is ready for discard immediately, whatever the wire break count says.

Test the float, not just the lift

The balancer is meant to hold the load weightless. Deteriorating float behaviour is almost always a leak or a tired valve – and the most common reason operators start helping by hand. We measure consumption at standstill instead of estimating it.

Hose routing through the joint

The pneumatic lines run through the moving arm. That is exactly where they chafe – on an edge, on a pin, on their own clamp. A hose that touches the same spot on every movement is damage with a date. We re-route it and protect the point.

Suspension and trolley

The ceiling trolley is checked for roller wear, tracking and end stops, the fixing into the structure for loose bolts. On hanging columns, the welds at the base as well.

When the task has changed

Change rope and attachment

A different workpiece rarely needs a different unit, but often a different attachment – and sometimes a rope of another length. Both are small interventions with a large effect.

Reach and suspension

A longer arm or an additional rail bay extends the working area. The limit sits in the moment and the suspension, not in the rope – we recalculate it.

Renew the control handle

The handle sees the most hand contact and ages accordingly. A new handle with finer control is the most noticeable change for operators and the cheapest one too.

Questions on maintenance and inspection

Do you service rope hoists and balancers from other manufacturers?

Yes. We inspect and maintain rope units regardless of make. Assessment of the wire rope follows ISO 4309 and therefore a rule that applies to every rope – manufacturer documentation helps but is not a precondition.

When does a wire rope have to be replaced?

When one of the discard criteria in ISO 4309 is reached: enough broken wires per reference length, a broken strand, birdcaging, a kink, severe corrosion or an impermissible reduction in diameter. A broken strand or birdcaging means immediate discard, whatever the rest of the rope looks like.

The load creeps down slowly. Why?

Almost always the pneumatics: a leak in the circuit, a leaking valve or a tired check valve. Rarely the rope drive. This is not cosmetic – holding the load on pressure loss is a safety function and part of the inspection.

How long does an inspection take?

That depends on condition and access, not on the type of unit. We tell you after the first survey rather than quoting a figure beforehand that will not hold on site.
