Equipment finder

Our tool for the first step: describe the handling task in your own words and you receive a shortlist of suitable units with reasoning. It does not replace the conversation with an engineer, but it shortens it considerably.

Selection starts with the task

Anyone looking for handling equipment usually looks for a design: balancer, manipulator, lifting axis. That is the second step. The first is describing the task – what is moved, from where to where, how often and in what environment. From that description the design follows almost by itself; conversely, choosing a design too early leads to equipment that carries the load but does not solve the task.

02

Five inputs every selection needs

These five inputs are enough for a sound shortlist.

  • Load: weight of the component, plus dimensions and position of the centre of gravity. The gripper is added later and counts towards the capacity.
  • Outreach: the distance to the furthest point that must be served – not the most frequent one.
  • Stroke: the heights of pick-up and set-down and whatever has to be cleared in between.
  • Cycle rate: how many movements per hour or shift.
  • Environment: room height, obstacles, floor construction, dirt, moisture, temperature, explosive atmosphere.
03

From the inputs to the design

If the load is only lifted, moved and set down freely, a device that compensates the weight is sufficient – a balancer. If parts are joined, rotated or gripped off-centre, rigid guidance is needed: a manipulator arm or a lifting axis. Obstacles in the way speak for an articulating jib; several stations for a rail system; a ban on drilling for a mobile unit on a base plate.

Outreach and load together give the moment that passes into floor or ceiling. The cycle rate decides how much attention the gripper deserves: at high frequency, pick-up time counts for more than lifting speed.

04

What an equipment finder does – and does not do

An equipment finder takes the description of the task and returns a reasoned shortlist. It saves the first round of queries and shows which designs come into consideration at all.

It does not replace the engineering. The tipping moment and anchoring, the design of the gripper, the capacity of floor or building and the risk assessment of the workstation call for figures, a site visit or at least photographs – and an engineer to assess them.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Equipment finder

What information do I need as a minimum for a shortlist?

Weight and dimensions of the component, the pick-up and set-down positions with distance and heights, the frequency and the environment. A photograph of the workstation replaces many queries.

Does an equipment finder replace consultation?

No. It provides a shortlist and shortens the conversation. The final design – moment, anchoring, gripper, structure – is done with the figures of the actual workstation.

What if several designs are possible?

Then the detail of the motion sequence decides: is there work against a stop anywhere? Does the load have to be rotated? How long does pick-up take? Observing today’s sequence often settles the question faster than any comparison of data sheets.
