Picking up a 160-kilogram insulating unit flat and setting it upright

A triple insulating unit measuring 2,500 × 1,500 weighs around 160 kilograms. It arrives flat or upright in a rack and has to go into the frame vertically, to the millimetre and without edge contact. Between picking up and setting lies a 90-degree rotation – and that is exactly where the damage happens.

01 — The task

Glass does not forgive a second attempt.

Pick up from the transport rack or the table, align, tilt, guide to the frame and set down. The pane must not wander out of the cup plane while tilting, or it will land on its edge – and a chipped edge is scrap, not a blemish. Setting adds small but directed forces: the pane has to be pushed against blocks and adjusted in height while suspended. Space is usually tight, access one-sided, and the ground in front of a facade is rarely level.

The rotator is the actual component

A vacuum lifter for glass consists of three parts that have to match: cup beam, rotation about the longitudinal axis and slewing about the vertical axis. The tilt from horizontal to vertical is the critical one: it must be damped and holdable in every intermediate position, not only at the end stops. We design it with a damped rotary drive and defined detents – so the fitter can let go at 60 degrees too and use both hands to align.

Safety on air failure is a requirement, not an option

Vacuum lifting devices for glass fall under the requirement to hold the load when energy fails. That means a check valve, reserve volume for at least five minutes of holding time and a vacuum monitor with visual and audible alarm. We add two separate suction circuits – if one fails the other carries the pane until it is set down. That is the difference between a lifting device and a lifting device for glass.

Reach in the workshop, mobility on site

In the glazing workshop an articulated arm on a column or rail system is the right answer: a defined path, high repeatability, no setting up and taking down. On site the opposite counts – there you need a mobile unit that fits through a doorway and stays stable without anchoring. We plan both routes through anchor forces or the tipping edge respectively; that is settled on the drawing, before the unit is chosen.

  • Edge damage and breakage during setting drop to practically zero.
  • Fine adjustment in the rebate succeeds on the suspended unit, with both hands free.

What payload do I need for insulating glass?

Reckon on roughly 2.5 kg per square metre per millimetre of glass thickness. A triple unit of 4/4/4 mm measuring 2.5 × 1.5 m therefore comes to about 112 kg of glass, plus 30 to 60 kg for cup beam and rotator. A 250 kg class is sufficient for ordinary window construction; 400 to 600 kg is usual in facade work.

Do cups hold on coated glass?

Yes, if cups and coating suit each other. On low-emissivity coatings we use soft, large-diameter cups with low contact pressure and non-marking sealing lips. What does not work: hard standard cups on textured or freshly coated glass – they leave marks that only become visible after installation.

Does a glass vacuum lifter need its own inspection?

It is a lifting accessory and therefore subject to inspection: once a year by a competent person, documented in the inspection log. In addition, vacuum monitor and check valve belong in the daily visual check. We cover both as part of the statutory inspection.
