Replacing a 180-kilogram centrifugal pump in the pipe basement – with no crane above it

Changing a centrifugal pump takes a shift – if everything fits. In practice half that time goes on getting the unit out of a recess with no crane above it and no forklift beside it. What is left is levers, rollers, timber blocks and a great deal of back.

01 — The task

There is no crane above the pump. There is a pipe rack.

Undo the connection, take the pump or valve out of the line, bring it out of the recess to the transport route, fit the replacement in reverse order and hit the flange pattern and shaft alignment while doing so. The place is tight: pipe racks, platforms, walkways, cable trays. The floor is rarely clear, access is one-sided, and above the installation point there is almost never a lifting point. Add time pressure – the plant is down, and everything that takes longer is lost production.

02 — The solution

How we solve it

The unit comes to the pump, not the pump to the unit

For maintenance the mobile design is the only one that genuinely solves the case. A mobile articulated-arm unit passes through an eighty-centimetre doorway, stands securely without anchoring and works from the position in which it was placed. Stability without outriggers is decisive: where outriggers have to be extended, you lose exactly the space the recess does not have.

Fitting means three axes at once

On refitting, the flange pattern has to match, the shaft has to align and the part has to sit level. Suspended from lifting gear by hand that is a matter of patience and a crowbar. With a mount that allows tilt and rotation to be adjusted sensitively it becomes a minute's work: the fitter turns the pump into the position where the bolts pass through instead of forcing it. That protects sealing faces and threads – and is the real time saved.

What stands in the plant is subject to inspection

Lifting gear in maintenance is used rarely and therefore has to be checked twice over: once a year by a competent person and before every use by visual inspection. We supply the inspection log, carry out the recurring inspection on request and check the lifting accessories at the same time – in maintenance they are, in our experience, the part that ages first.

  • Fitting is done sensitively instead of with leverage – sealing faces stay undamaged.
  • No lifting point above the installation position is needed.

Why not a chain hoist on the pipe rack?

Because a pipe rack is not a lifting point. It is designed for pipes and their contents, not for point loads from lifting gear; attaching to it without structural evidence is not permissible. That is exactly why the mobile unit is the right answer in maintenance – it brings its own lifting point.

Will such a unit even fit into our plant?

The usual designs pass through an eighty-centimetre door width and work with around two metres of reach. The constraint is usually not width but ground clearance over thresholds and gratings. We look at the routes beforehand – in these cases that is the most important part of the design work.

What applies in a hazardous area?

The lifting gear belongs to the zone like any other equipment: pneumatic drive, conductive wheels, suitable materials, marking and declaration of conformity. We supply the design to match the operator's zone classification and document it.
