What the regulation actually requires
German load handling regulations oblige the employer to avoid manual load handling where possible – and, where it is unavoidable, to assess and reduce the risk. Deliberately, no number is given: twenty kilograms handled upright, close to the body, twice a day is something other than the same twenty kilograms in trunk flexion, with outstretched arms, four hundred times a shift. That difference is exactly what the key indicator method captures.
